How the tip is calculated
Tip amount = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100). The total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person share is the total divided by the number of people in your group.
Example: a $50.00 bill with an 18% tip works out to a $9.00 tip, a $59.00 total, and $19.67 each if split three ways.
Common tip ranges in the US: 15% is typical for average service, 18–20% for good service, and 20%+ for exceptional service. Counter-service and takeout tipping runs higher than many people expect — a LendingTree card-tip study puts the quick-service average at 15.8%, against 19.4% at full-service restaurants.
Example: a $215.00 bill with a 20% tip split five ways is $51.60 per person. Rounding the tip and the total separately, instead of rounding only the final numbers you display, is the most common way to end up a cent or two off from doing the math by hand.
Most etiquette guidance calculates the tip on the pre-tax subtotal and on the full menu price, not a discounted or comped price — the server did the same work either way. Nothing stops you from tipping on more if you want to be generous.
