How the tip is calculated
Tip amount = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100). The total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person amount is the total divided by the number of people in your group.
Example: a $50.00 bill with an 18% tip works out to a $9.00 tip, a $59.00 total, and $19.67 each if split three ways.
Common tip ranges in the US: 15% is typical for average service, 18–20% for good service, and 20%+ for exceptional service. For counter service or takeout, 0–10% is common.
